Welcome to the Game of Life...
My name is Dexter Young. I learned the game of life from my dad as I watched him raise 13 children in the rough streets on the southside of Chicago. He never let us think that what we saw was the extent of our potential. He taught us to dream big and outside of the box. This one man made life seem like we lived in the suburbs of a place called loveland. We read the Bible and the dictionary, he organized and led trips for the entire neighborhood to go skating and bowling, and he was the coach for the neighborhood baseball teams. We played, learned, and worshiped together. Discipline was what kept us together and in order. Education ...Challenge... is what pushed us to excel. Everything we did at home taught us and made us who we are. That's why this page is called the game...a tribute to the game of life.
Basketball has helped me in every facet of my life. I can relate every life occurrence to basketball- learning work ethic, teamwork, passion, discipline perseverance, you name it! That's where the name "the game" originated. Basketball has allowed me to experience the world through international travel to dozens of countries around the world and many, many US states.
I could compare the phases of my life to the 4 quarters in a basketball game. 1st Quarter- My dad laid the foundation. 2nd Quarter- The legendary Simeon High School coach, Bob Hambric- elevated me to another level of success. He was an example of hard work, integrity, and orderliness. I appreciate the one on one time that he spent molding me into player and young man I became. 3rd quarter- Out on my own, I lost track as I got older. Until I met my wife- the best wife and best friend in the world! I knew my wife was heaven sent because I never thought about or wanted to have girlfriend/get married, it was all about me, but then this wonderful angel came & changed me more than I could've imagined besides GOD. I'm stubborn and I'm not easy to deal with, but she stayed by my side. This is why I help others become men/women. This is the truth and those who know me, know just how much I love her. 4th Quarter- GOD. Those 3 showed me that its bigger than me..my accolades and achievements are all blessings from GOD.
I've lost my dad & coach within the last 4 years but the game doesn't end there.. I consider this overtime (OT). Where do I go from here...it's game time baby. With God and wife on my side, I know I'll win. SWISH.....
